114. Bald Eagle

Date          May 16, 2003
Location     Delaware Wildlife Area, Delaware, OH

On to the main event.

Adjacent to the state park is the wildlife area. It was well known at the time that there was an eagle's nest there, and I knew where it was, but any trails going near it were closed to give the eagles some space. The best view you could get normally was a brown blotch with a white splotch on top.

On this day, the eaglet would be retrieved from the nest to be banded, and we could all approach a designated area close by. There was media coverage from one of the local TV stations, along with various dignitaries from ODNR and who knows what else.

When I arrived, the climber was just about to the nest. It was not a trivial task. In fact, the guy was a professional. The nest was about 50 feet up in a tree. He put the eaglet in some sort of apparatus, and it was lowered down.

Meanwhile, the parents were flying around the area extremely agitated. So I got plenty of great views. I only got a glimpse of the eaglet because there were so many other people crowding around to see it.
