219. Wild Turkey

Date         July 28, 2010
Location    Wilderness Territory resort, Wisconsin Dells, WI

This bird was becoming one of those annoying birds that you should have seen already, but for some reason it has eluded you. There was even the one time when I thought I had it in Nebraska. Logan and I could hear it gobbling. We got closer and closer.

And then we found him. In a wired enclosure. He was basically a display: this is one of the birds you can see in Nebraska!

This time though, the turkey was unfettered. We were on a horse ride through the woods around the resort where we were staying. At the end of the ride, one wandered across the path in front of us. He appeared to not take notice of the humans on the horses; he was quite close to the riders and wasn't in any hurry to move on.

So we rode on past and finally saw our first Wild Turkey, my only new bird in 2010.
