Location McDowell Mountain Regional Park, Phoenix, AZ
The next morning, early, I set out for McDowell park, which is basically one long road through the desert that terminates in a small campground area with running water available and a restroom. Walking trails cross the road at certain points.
The first new bird that morning was a flicker, which I observed feeding nestlings in a saguaro cactus. It sounded pretty much just like a Northern Flicker.
Cornell: Gilded Flicker
