Off to the left, perched on a saguaro cactus, it was immediately obvious what it was, but I ticked off the field marks anyway.
And that was the last of the new birds on my first western US trip. I had gotten 21 new birds. That was very satisfying despite the misses I had. But as I would learn, even in a new place, just because everything is new, that doesn't mean that you are entitled to be able to identify everything.
