All those hours carefully listening to his calls, comparing it to the cuckoo's, paid off. Right at sunset, I heard the "cu-cu-cu-cu-cu" breeding call in one of the little marshes. Magical.
It was already fairly dark, and the marsh was quite shadowed, so I had no expectation of actually seeing him, but it was positive ID.
