190. Lesser Nighthawk

Date         May 9, 2007
Location    Desert Ridge Marriott, Phoenix, AZ

The last bird of this glorious day was the Lesser Nighthawk. I noticed that they were much quieter than their common cousins and flew in small groups, lower to the ground. I saw them at dusk.

A couple of days later I would see another small flock at dusk that flew very close to me, and I heard a quiet, hooting trill as one pursued another.

My first day birding in the west had turned out almost better than I expected. There were a couple of birds that I couldn't identify, like a hummingbird in the botanical garden, but I had logged eight new birds.
