116. Great Egret

Date          May 28, 2003
Location     Shrum Mound, Columbus, OH

I'm not sure how I found this place, but since I was always on the lookout for new and exciting birding locations, I spotted this little Indian mound park on McKinney Ave.

It was a nice enough spot by itself, but the real fun came when you walked up the spiraling trail to the top of the mound. There, you could look out at an old quarry now filled with water. It actually looks like a river.

In the middle of the water is a small island covered with trees, which in turn were covered with egret and heron nests. I didn't even realize that egrets nested this far north.

He flew out of the trees, and I observed his black legs.
