I finally found out what the "big black crow-looking things" were that my mom was describing to me. I had no idea that these birds were common residential birds. They were everywhere. In yards, parking lots, etc.
This was the last bird in July, 2003, and I would get none in August, breaking my streak. It was inevitable, of course, but I could have delayed it a bit by going out more while I was visiting my parents. I guess the Painted Bunting would have to wait.
